Aubameyang’s goal sends Barca into Europa League quarter-finals

BARCELONA ensured themselves to advance to the quarter-finals of the Europa League after beating Galatasary in the second leg of the round of 16. Barca successfully bend Galatasaray 1-2 after playing without a goal in the first meeting.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appeared as the winner of the Blaugrana’s victory. The former Arsenal player is slowly starting to rediscover his identity as a goal-hungry striker.

Signed to Barca in the January transfer window, the Gabon international has now scored seven goals, two of which he scored in the Europa League. Aubameyang scored the other five goals in six appearances in La Liga, including a hat-trick against Valencia last February.

Playing at Galatasaray’s Nef Stadium, Istanbul, Friday (18/3) morning, Xavi Hernandez’s team fell behind the hosts in the 28th minute through Marcao’s goal.

However, less than 10 minutes later Barca equalized through a brilliant goal from Pedri. The 19-year-old showed great skill in tricking several Galatasaray players in the penalty area before slotting the ball into the net.

In the second half, the Blaugrana squad did pressing in the early minutes and immediately pounded on the Galatasaray defense. The result was created in the 49th minute through Aubameyang’s tap-in goal using Frenkie de Jong’s header.

“We played with great character. It was a great performance to come back against a very good (Galatasaray) team. They knew how to defend against us, but we were patient. I am very happy for my players,” said Xavi.

After the victory, the Blaugrana will turn their attention to the El Clasico match at Real Madrid headquarters, Monday (21/3) morning. In La Liga, Barca are in third place with a difference of 15 points from Madrid who topped the standings. (AFP/OL-13)
