Bali United Starts League 1 with a Win

The defending CHAMPIONS of Liga 1 Bali United started the 2022/2023 season with three important points. The victory was won by Serdadu Tridatu’s squad when they hosted Persija Jakarta with a narrow 1-0 score at the Captain I Wayan Dipta Stadium, Gianyar, Bali, Saturday (23/7) night.

Bali United’s only goal was created by Willian Pacheco through his header in the 39th minute. Bali United coach Stefano Cugurra, appreciated the hard work of his team.

The coach, who is familiarly called Teco, admitted that winning over Persija was not easy because the Kemayoran Tigers had several new players from Europe who he considered qualified.

“The score 1-0 is enough. It’s very good for us to get three points in the first game,” Teco said in his post-match press conference.

He admitted his squad had to play defensively. Throughout the match, Bali United only controlled the ball 37%. He realized this because Persija players were quite dominant in playing the ball from foot to foot.

“We played a little bit different this time defending and trying with set pieces.”

Persija coach Thomas Doll was forced to make his debut in dealing with the capital city team with a defeat. Despite having the ball, Doll said his squad was still lacking in finishing.

He briefly touched on the referee’s decision not to give Persija a penalty kick because the Balinese players seemed to be doing handball in the first half. The decision was seen as detrimental. (OL-1)
