Champions League Quarter-Final Draw, Chelsea Meets Real Madrid

Chelsea and Real Madrid have to go through a hard struggle to be able to step into the semifinals of the Champions League 2021-2022 season. In the draw which took place on Friday (18/3), Chelsea, the defending champions, and Real Madrid, 13 times champion of the Champions League, had to face each other in the quarter-finals.

Chelsea qualified for the quarter-finals by eliminating representatives of France, Lille, with a 4-1 aggregate after winning 2-0 in the first leg and 2-1 in the second leg. Meanwhile, Real Madrid stepped into the top four through Karim Benzema’s hat-trick against PSG which brought Los Blancos to a 3-1 win in the second leg. The victory made Carlo Ancelotti’s squad win 3-2 on aggregate after losing 0-1 at home to PSG in the first leg.

If they qualify for the semifinals, Chelsea or Real Madrid will face the winner of another quarter-final match between Manchester City and Atletico Madrid. Manchester City qualified for the last 8 after getting rid of Sporting Lisbon 5-0 on aggregate. Winning 5-0 in the first leg, Pep Guardiola’s men played 0-0 in the second leg.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid advanced to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in the second leg. In the first leg, Diego Simeone’s troops drew 1-1 so they qualified 2-1 on aggregate.

In another match, another Spanish club, Villarreal will challenge Bayern Munich. Villarreal became the dark horse after getting rid of Juventus 4-1 on aggregate. Playing 1-1 in the first leg, Villarreal surprisingly won 3-0 at home to Juventus in the second leg.

Meanwhile, Munich qualified for the quarter-finals after crushing RB Salzburg 8-2 on aggregate. Playing 1-1 at home to Salzburg in the first leg, Munich went crazy when hosting the second leg by winning 7-1.

The winner of the match between Villarreal and Munich will face the winner of the quarter-final match between Liverpool and Benfica. Liverpool advanced to the round of 8 after eliminating Inter Milan 2-1 on aggregate after winning 2-0 in the first leg and losing 0-1 in the second leg. While Benfica stepped into the next round after getting rid of the Dutch representative, Ajax Amsterdam with a 3-2 aggregate after playing 2-2 in the first leg and winning 1-0 in the second leg.

The first legs of the 2021/2022 Champions League quarter-finals will be held on 6 and 7 April 2022, while the second legs will be held on 13 and 14 April.

The semifinals will take place April 27 & 28 and May 4 & 5. The final will be held at the Stade de France, Paris, following UEFA’s decision to strip the hosts Russia, on 28 May. (OL-15)
