Davies has the opportunity to start when Bayern face Villarreal

Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies has the chance to start the match against Villarreal in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Thursday (7/4) WIB, after recovering from a heart problem that has kept him out for more than three months. This was said by Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann, Tuesday (5/4).

The Canadian footballer has been sidelined since early January because he was diagnosed with a mild heart problem after contracting COVID-19. He last played in a competitive match on 17 December 2021 but could start the game against Villarreal.

“He will come with us,” Nagelsmann told a virtual press conference before Bayern departed for Spain.

“His last test was very positive. So he will travel with us and he can start tomorrow but we have to see today and tomorrow. But it is possible.”

The Bavarian club, who are top of the Bundesliga table and unbeaten in the Champions League this season, are the favorites to win the match.

Villarreal lost a shock 0-2 to Levante, who are in danger of relegation from La Liga. This keeps them in seventh place in the Spanish League standings.

However, Nagelsmann warned that this situation could actually make Villarreal very dangerous in European competition.

“If you listen to the words of (Villarreal coach) Unai Emery, the Champions League is a bonus for him,” said Nagelsmann.

“They were really below expectations in the league and are in seventh place and now they lost to Levante. They know they have to qualify for Europe next season and cannot assume they will win the Champions League.”

“So I think they will be quite free in the way they play against us. They won’t be under the pressure we felt, but my players can handle it because we have to play our (favourite) role,” he said.

Nagelsmann said Villarreal, who won the Europa League last season, were by no means a team to be underestimated.

“Villarreal have a coach who is very experienced at winning in international competitions. This team is very experienced and we have to find a way to destroy them,” he said.

The second leg between Bayern and Villarreal will take place in Munich on April 12. (Ant/OL-1)
