Elkan Baggot Ready to Strengthen Garuda Squad in Asian Cup Qualification

Indonesian national team player of British descent, Elkan Baggott confirmed that he can defend the Indonesian national team in the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification match which will take place next June.

The Indonesian national team will indeed participate in various events in 2022, including the Asian Cup Qualification and the 2022 SEA Games. However, Elkan can only ensure that he is available for the Asian Cup.

Elkan is currently defending English club, Ipswich Town. Even the defender who had lived in Thailand was the captain of the Ipswich youth team. Therefore, it will be difficult for Elkan if he participates in the SEA Games, next May.

“Currently I am still discussing with the coaching staff whether I will join the SEA Games, but I will definitely join the Asian Cup qualifiers in June,” said Elkan to the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Kingdom, Desra Believe.

“That’s because the SEA Games started when the competition in England was still ongoing. I’m still discussing it now. So I can’t confirm it now,” said the Indonesian national team player at the 2020 AFF Cup.

Previously, Shin Tae-yong as the head coach of the Indonesian national team had planned that the SEA Games would only be participated by players who did not play in foreign competitions, let alone Europe. Tae-yong understands that the schedule for the SEA Games is out of sync with other competitions overseas.

However, the SEA Games squad which will be held in May will also be the foundation for the senior Indonesian national team for the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification. The Indonesian national team is in Group A which will be held in Kuwait, with other participants Jordan and Nepal.

“For the preparation for the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification, there are almost 80 percent of the core players in the SEA Games team. So, it will also be preparation for the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification,” said the South Korean coach some time ago. (Goal/OL-15)
