KAI Havertz scored the winning goal in the 89th minute to bring Chelsea 1-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge, Sunday (13/3).
This is their first home game since the British government sanctioned their Russian owner, Roman Abramovich, by freezing his assets.
The visitors, seeking to move further away from the relegation zone, frustrated the European champions for much of the game.
But just as the game looked set to end in a draw, Jorginho sent a long ball past the Newcastle defense to Havertz.
The German then worked the ball with his left before firing a shot past Martin Dubravka.
Havertz almost scored his second but Dubravka parried the ball with his hands and then hit the crossbar.
The win keeps the Blues in third place in the table which is 10 points behind leaders Manchester City who play tomorrow Monday.
Chelsea remain on course for a top four finish to guarantee a Champions League place next season. Meanwhile, Newcastle are 14th or nine points from the relegation zone. (OL-8)
