Humiliated by Villarreal, Allegri remains proud of Juventus’ game

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri claims his team still performed well despite being humiliated by Villarreal at home with a score of 0-3, Thursday (17/3) early morning WIB. He emphasized that he would not change the way he played even though he was criticized by many fans.

The 0-3 score itself made Juventus lose 1-4 on aggregate and were eliminated from the 2021/2022 Champions League.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side were loudly booed by the crowd who watched their team disappointed by the coach’s initial promise to qualify for the quarter-finals of Juventus. Despite suffering a stifling defeat, Allegri insisted he would not change the way his team played.

“I will play the same way because the players played well for 65 minutes. At some point, Villarreal put everyone at the back and only one mistake could break the deadlock,” said Allegri.

The Bianconeri were eliminated in the last 16 of the Champions League for the third year in a row. Juventus were dominant in Turin, having almost 60% possession and having 14 shots and having several chances.

However, the hosts’ concentration then collapsed in the last 15 minutes of the game as they conceded three goals in a row through Gerard Moreno (78′), Pau Torres (85′) penalties and Arnaut Danjuma’s penalties in second-half stoppage time.

“I thought the team played well for more than 75 minutes. In the second half, Villarreal decided to just stay in the blocks but they had one chance and they took it. Football like that one chance can change everything,” he said.

This humiliating defeat was Juventus’ second since late November and saw them refocus on the title race in the league. The result also makes no more Italian teams in the Champions League this season .

Meanwhile, Villarreal, advanced to the quarter-finals and still have a great chance to match their highest achievement in the 2006 edition, which successfully advanced to the semifinals before being defeated by Arsenal.

“It was a magical night. We thought we could do it, we always showed that in big games we compete, the team gives our best, we all want to be up there with the best in Europe, we will keep dreaming and we will do it together ,” said goalscorer Gerard Moreno. (AFP/Footballitalia/OL-5)
