Injury, Di Lorenzo Absent from Defending the Italian National Team in the 2022 World Cup Qualification Playoffs

Napoli defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo is confirmed to be unable to play for the Italian national team in the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs due to a right knee injury. This was confirmed by FIGC, Sunday (20/3).

Di Lorenzo, who has made 19 appearances for the Italian national team, limped off the pitch during Napoli’s 2-1 win over Udinese on Saturday (19/3).

After undergoing an examination, Sunday (20/3), it was confirmed that Di Lorenzo could not strengthen the Italian national team and was sent back to his club.

AC Milan defender Alessandro Florenzi has the opportunity to fill Di Lorenzo’s position although Roberto Mancini still has the opportunity to call on other players.

Italy will face North Macedonia in Palermo on March 24. If they win, the Azzurri will face the winner of the match between Portugal and Turkey five days later for a ticket to the 2022 World Cup.

Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the first time the Azzurri failed to appear in a major tournament in 60 years, having lost in the playoffs to Sweden. (AFP/OL-1)
