Itaewon, the Scary Halloween Witness Elite Area in South Korea

A total of 151 people died due to overcrowding after fighting in the crowds of Halloween celebrations in Itaewon, South Korea. The night that should have been lively turned into sorrow.

South Korea was in the spotlight at Halloween celebrations after the viral crowd of a sea of ​​people in the Itaewon area that led to the deaths of visitors on Saturday night (29/10/2022). The latest news, as many as 151 people died and dozens of others were injured. Even hundreds of reports of missing persons echoed in Seoul.

Itaewon is arguably the most popular nightlife center in South Korea. The area here is in the form of small alleys filled with bars, restaurants, cafes, shopping places and nightclubs. This area is number three most expensive in Seoul.

Since the drama Itaewon Class, the Itaewon area has become increasingly popular among tourists. More than 2,000 shops lined up exhibiting various attractions that are hunted by tourists.

It’s also crowded with expats because of its proximity to the Yongsan Garrison US Military Base in the west. So many Caucasians from various American and European countries hang out here. And the Itaewon area also has many foreign restaurants.

Besides being a culinary and shopping destination, Itaewon also has Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art and Itaewon Mosque. Well, the interesting fact is that Itaewon is the Muslim center of South Korea, you know.

In Itaewon there is a magnificent mosque consisting of three floors, namely the Seoul Grand Mosque which opened in 1976. This mosque is located in Hannam-dong, Yongsan District. So around the mosque became a home for Muslim immigrants and South Koreans. Of course, many Halal restaurants can be found around here.

Itaewon is also a unique area in itself because of its diversity. People often say, Itaweon is not in South Korea because of the diversity of people in it.

As a nightlife center, young people always come to this area at every important moment such as Halloween. But who would have thought, this year’s Halloween became tense because many people died because of jostling against the flow of people.

If a traveler pays attention in cyberspace, videos and photos circulate of how people crowd Itaewon at Halloween celebrations. It was so crowded, there was no room for people to move, so there were urges to get out of the crowds of people.

Tragically, more than a hundred people died from heart failure and suffocated from being trapped in a crowd. The incident took place in a narrow alley next to the landmark Hotel Hamilton. This narrow alley that is slightly uphill serves as a meeting point for hotel guests and crowds from exits 1 and 2 of Itaewon subway station.

Victims continue to fall, news of missing people continues to increase making Halloween in Itaewon tense.
