Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has terminated his contract with sponsor Huawei after the Chinese tech company was accused of helping Russia secure their network from cyberattacks following the invasion of Ukraine.

“We have taken the decision to terminate the marketing partnership between Robert Lewandowski and Huawei,” said Lewandowski’s agent, Tomasz Zawislak.

According to Polish media reports, Lewandowski’s decision was taken due to an article in the Daily Mail accusing Huawei of helping Russia secure their internet network from attacks by pro-Ukrainian hackers.

Huawei has also confirmed the end of their cooperation with Lewandowski.

“Huawei CBG Poland regrets the end of cooperation with Robert Lewandowski. We appreciate our cooperation over the years and wish him success in the future,” Huawei said.

Lewandowski has expressed his support for Ukrainians after the Russian invasion by wearing a bracelet in the color of the Ukrainian flag.

“The world must not accept what is happening there. I hope the whole world supports Ukraine,” said Lewandowski. (AFP/OL-1)
