Luis Diaz and Salah lead Liverpool to beat Brighton

LUIS Diaz and Mohamed Salah each contributed one goal as Liverpool won 2-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion in the match week 29 of the Premier League at the Amex Stadium, Saturday (12/3)

Diaz opened the Reds’ lead in the 19th minute when he headed in Joel Matip’s long ball. But Liverpool’s players barely celebrated the goal as the Colombian star fell to the ground after colliding with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez who came out of the net.

Diaz was finally able to continue the game even appearing the full 90 minutes off the field with his second Premier League goal of the season. Meanwhile VAR and referee Mike Dean decided not to give Sanchez a penalty after reviewing the alleged red card violation.

Liverpool’s lead lasted until half-time after many wasted chances. In the end, Salah managed to score their second goal with a penalty in the 61st minute, following a handball foul by Yves Bissouma when he accidentally blocked Naby Keita’s shot with his hand.

Salah had to leave early for Diogo Jota four minutes later after appearing to complain in pain to captain Jordan Henderson and clutch the back of his left leg after celebrating his goal.

The match left a bitter pill for Brighton because shortly after conceding Salah’s goal, Liverpool goalkeeper Allison Becker seemed to be standing outside his penalty box and straining the ball. But the referee Mike Dean and the linesman did not take any action on the incident.

Victory leaves second-placed Liverpool now on 66 points and closes the gap on leaders Manchester City, who only play on Monday (14/3) at home to Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Brighton, who suffered their first straight defeat of the season and are winless in the last five games, had to settle for not moving from 13th place with 33 points, according to the Premier League’s official website.

Both teams are scheduled to return to play on Wednesday (16/3) next week for their respective postponed matches. Liverpool travel to Arsenal, while Brighton host Tottenham Hotspur. (OL-8)
