Raul de Tomas’ only goal towards the end of the first half gave Espanyol a 1-0 win over Mallorca which also forced their visitors to lose their seventh successive league match at the RCDE Stadium, Sunday (20/3).
Mallorca had lost six in a row before this match started and are only one level in the Spanish LaLiga relegation zone. On the other hand, Espanyol are increasingly comfortable in the middle of the standings.
They played more attacking with Adrian Embarba and Raul de Tomas a real threat to the visitors.
Sergi Darder stole the ball in Mallorca’s midfield to keep pushing in front of Mallorca’s goal but failed to break into the opponent’s goal. He then had a maneuver that was well completed by Raul de Tomas by sending a calm finish into the corner of the Mallorca goal.
Raul de Tomas then created a good chance early in the second half, but failed to beat Sergio Rico when it was one-on-one. This was the last clear chance the hosts had.
In the final half hour, Mallorca pressed Espanyol to try to equalise. Espanyol replaced veteran goalkeeper Diego Lopez with Oier Olazabal who proved to be brilliant.
It was Olazabal who repelled Vedat Muriqi’s effort which was Mallorca’s best chance. Mallorca continued to press but could no longer create chances until the final whistle. (OL-8)
