Motorcycle Parking Rp. 44 thousand per hour, Residents Crowded Protest

The Government of Paris, France has officially imposed a new rule regarding motorbike parking fees as of September 1, 2022. If it was free, now two-wheeled vehicle owners have to pay a rate of 3 Euros or Rp. 44 thousand per hour.

Assistant to the Mayor of Paris, David Belliard said the regulation was enforced, so that motorists in the local area began to switch to public transportation such as buses and trains.

“This is indeed a controversial move, there must be a lot of people who are not happy. But, some people may also agree with this new rule. We want to limit vehicles that take up a lot of public space, make noise and produce pollution,” Belliard was quoted as saying by Euronews, Thursday 1 September 2022.

“It is estimated that there are 100,000 scooters and motorbikes passing through the city of Paris. We want to encourage migration to other forms of mobility,” he added.

According to the rules that have been enforced as of today, motorbike parking in the center of Paris is charged Rp. 44 thousand per hour, while in the suburbs you have to pay Rp. 29 thousand per hour. Meanwhile, local residents can make a subscription card of Rp. 330 thousand with a parking rate of Rp. 11 thousand per hour.

The high cost was then rejected by Parisians who are accustomed to using motorbikes. One of them is from a travel worker named S├ębastien Mazelier who everywhere often rides two-wheeled modes.

“This is a disaster. We work an average of 8 to 12 hours per day in Paris. If we have to pay IDR 44 thousand per hour, it means that a month we have to spend IDR 7.4 million just to park our motorbikes,” said Mazelier.

Especially for electric motors, the owner only needs to pay 50 percent of the fees charged. However, still, the price of these non-emission mounts is still very expensive in France.

One worker who lives not far from the center of Paris, Roman Lagrost said he actually wanted to buy an electric motorbike. Only, he didn’t have enough money.

“I bought a petrol motorbike for only 8000 Euros, while an electric motorbike costs up to 20 thousand Euros. That’s theft!” said Roman.
