MU Await Luck Resurrection CR7

TUAH Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to be back when Manchester United host Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League last 16, Wednesday (16/3) early morning WIB. CR7 has returned to his best form last weekend with his hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur.

Ronaldo gave United fans hope from his second arrival at Old Trafford. Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Tottenham was his 59th for the club and the Portugal national team. It was also his second hat-trick for United and his first in 14 years in the Premier League.

United go into their Champions League last 16 tie against Atletico Madrid, after a 1-1 draw in Spain. For United, European glory is their only chance left for the title this season.

In the first leg then, Ronaldo could not do much. His frail appearance as a frustrated and isolated figure in public at the Wanda Metropolitano three weeks ago is more reflective of the problems facing United manager Ralf Rangnick. CR7 only scored two shots throughout the 90 minutes, and even then none of them were aimed at goal.

However, during the match against Tottenham last, his top-notch performance silenced the criticism directed at him after it was alleged that he did not want to appear in the match against Manchester City because he was only a substitute.

“He (Ronaldo) showed for sure that he is physically capable of doing that. We also have to admit that it hasn’t always been like that in the last few weeks and months,” Rangnick said.

Manchester United striker Paul Pogba believes the victory over Tottenham was a timely victory ahead of the second leg against Atletico Madrid.

“We needed a win against Tottenham, who are a team that are next to us, and I think that gives us a push into the Champions League. Now we are only thinking about the next game, which is the Champions League. We want to win this one and then we will think about the top four after that,” Pogba said.

The Red Devils performed poorly at the Wanda Metropolitano but Pogba believes they have learned from that first leg performance.

“We know what we did wrong and I think we will do well to beat them,” he added.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid also got a morale boost before traveling to Old Trafford by beating Cadiz 2-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday (12/3) early morning WIB. The victory brought Los Rojiblancos – Atletico’s nickname – to fourth place in the La Liga standings with the same points as Barcelona in third with 51 points.

Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann said his team had to fight against the Red Devils in order to win and qualify for the quarter-finals. He said his team was confident in facing this match.

“We hope to win and qualify, we have a team that can do it. We have to fight every second,” Griezmann said.

According to him, the match against Manchester United is a beautiful match to play as well as an important match.

“We know a lot of fans are coming. For us this is a very important match, where we have to win to qualify and hopefully it will be a great night,” said the former Barcelona player.

“We are confident, we are playing well. Whoever the player is, whether a starter or a substitute, is playing very well,” he continued. (AFP/Marca/OL-4)
