Persib Targets President’s Cup Group Winner

PERSIB Bandung is eyeing the top position in Group C of the 2022 President’s Cup, in order to host the quarter-finals.

Against Bhayangkara FC in the last match of Group C at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung, on Tuesday (21/6) tomorrow, the Maung Bandung squad only needs a draw.

“We remain focused on the match and still have the same target, which is to win the group,” said Persib coach Robert Rene Alberts, Monday (20/6).

Persib is eyeing the top position of the standings, because the group winners have the advantage of being the host. Currently, Persib is still in a state of mourning over the death of two supporters at the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium last week.

In the standings, Persib occupies the first position with four points from one draw and one win. Meanwhile, Bhayangkara FC is in second place with the same points, but lost on goal difference.

It is certain that Rene Alberts’ squad will not be strengthened by several key players. For example, Ciro Alves, who suffered a broken bone in the shoulder and will be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Defender Victor Igbonefo also suffered a fractured cheekbone and will be sidelined. Then, the main goalkeeper, Teja Paku Alam, is also still sidelined after undergoing surgery.

Alberts considers Bhayangkara to be a competitor in Group C, which has good quality and should be watched out for. “This is a challenge for us, because Victor has a long injury and hopefully he can recover soon. Ciro also has a fracture in his left shoulder,” he added.

Bhayangkara FC coach Widodo C Putro said his squad was ready to fight in the match to determine the group winner. He did not consider the absence of several key Persib players as an advantage for his squad.

According to him, Persib still have to watch out for, even though some of its pillar players are injured. Bhayangkara also targets to get full points. (OL-11)
