Rennes beats host Lyon

RENNES scored three goals in the first half during a 4-2 win at home to Lyon, Monday (14/3) WIB, to reclaim third place in the Ligue 1 standings, as well as being a perfect warm-up for the second leg of the UEFA Conference League last 16. against Leicester City, mid-week.

Gaetan Laborde and Martin Terrier played one or two to then find Benjamin Bourigeaud who rounded Anthony Lopes for the opener in the 11th minute.

Two minutes later, Rennes doubled the lead when Bourigeaud’s corner was cleared by Lucas Paqueta but the ball went straight for Baptiste Santamaria who then sent a half-volley that Paqueta deflected past Lopes into the net in the 13th minute.

Lopes made another mistake when his clearance was intercepted by Laborde, who immediately fed it to Bourigeaud for the player to pass to Lovro Majer for the third goal in the 45+1 minute.

The hosts changed the formation of their players at halftime. However, four minutes after the second half started, it was Rennes who scored his fourth goal which was made by substitute Malo Gusto in the 49th minute. It was Gusto’s 14th goal of the season.

Lyon looked nothing like a side that had won five of their last eight league games, struggling to find a goal back.

Rennes captain Hamari Traore actually scored for Lyon with his own goal in the 59th minute.

Just over half an hour later, Rennes goalkeeper Alfred Gomis rammed Moussa Dembele in the box for Lyon to be awarded a penalty. Dembele successfully carried out his duties as penalty executioner by netting a goal into the Rennes goal in the 82nd minute. (Ant/OL-1)
