Cristiano Ronaldo will reportedly be substituted by coach Erik ten Hag in Manchester United’s opener in the 2022-2023 Premier League season against Brighton and Hove Albion, this weekend. This condition is the aftermath of ongoing uncertainty over CR7’s future at the club.
The Portuguese superstar has 12 months left on his £360,000-a-week contract at United. However CR7 has expressed his desire to leave the club earlier this summer because he wants to play in the Champions League.
The 37-year-old previously missed United’s pre-season tour of Bangkok and Australia. Ronaldo just joined in the pre-season match with the Red Devils against Spanish team Rayo Vallecano with the final score 1-1. But he played just 45 minutes before leaving Old Traffiord before the game ended.
Therefore, Erik ten Hag has decided Ronaldo will start United’s Premier League opener against Brighton on the bench. The Dutch manager has put his trust in Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford up front after impressing during their pre-season.
However, Ten Hag is still wary of Martial’s fitness problems just four days ahead of Sunday’s opener against Brighton at Old Trafford. The Frenchman picked up an injury during United’s 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in pre-season.
That comes as a blow to Ten Hag as Martial has rediscovered his best form away from home this pre-season tour. After not being able to play at Manchester United and being loaned to Sevilla in the second half of the 2021/2022 season, Martial performed brilliantly by collecting 3 goals and 1 assist in three of MU’s pre-season matches.
Goals against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace have provided some impetus that Martial could be United’s main man again after the previous few seasons failed to live up to expectations. (Dailymail/OL-12)
