Southgate Firm Support for Maguire

GARETH Southgate insists Harry Maguire can still compete at the highest level when the England defender is ready to return to play in the friendly against Ivory Coast, Wednesday (30/3) early morning WIB.

Maguire was left out of England’s 2-1 win over Switzerland on Saturday (26/3) with Southgate hoping Maguire can escape the spotlight over his poor form at Manchester United.

The 29-year-old defender has been in poor form this season, sparking calls for Southgate to drop him from the Three Lions squad.

However, Southgate is planning to make a major overhaul for the match against Ivory Coast and Maguire is one of the players who will start in that match.

That’s because centre-back is one of the few positions in the England national team after Ben White, Marc Guehi and Conor Coady failed to shine against Switzerland.

“H has taken us to the semifinals of the World Cup and the final of the European Cup. So, there is no need to doubt his ability to play at the highest level,” Southgate told reporters on Monday (28/3).

“Yes, he struggled with his club but there must be many reasons for that,” he continued. (AFP/OL-1)
