Tear Gas Is Not Lethal, Especially Expired

The Indonesian National Police confirmed that expired tear gas was used during a crowd riot at the stadium.
However, the effect of the chemical liquid is less than what is still valid. He also stressed that tear gas had no lethal effect.

“There are some that were found (tear gas) in 2021, I still don’t know the number, but there are some,” said the Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police, Inspector General of Police Dedi Prasetyo at the National Police Headquarters, Jakarta, today.

Although it is not yet known how much expired tear gas was used during the riot at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Dedi confirmed that most of the tear gas (chlorobenzalmalononitrile/CS) used at that time was tear gas which was still valid with red and blue CS types.

The two-star police general explained that there are three types of tear gas used by Brimob personnel throughout Indonesia, namely red, blue and green. Its use is also regulated according to mass escalation and the level of contingency that occurs.

The green tear gas used was first in the form of smoke, when it was fired there was an explosion in the air containing white smoke. The second tear gas, which is blue to dispel mass, is moderate.

“So, if the cluster is in small quantities, medium-level tear gas is used,” he said.

Then red tear gas was used to reduce the mass in bulk. “So, to quote the expert, none of these levels, CS or tear gas at the highest level is lethal,” said Dedi.

Regarding expired tear gas, Dedi said that every tear gas has a time limit for use, but it is different from expiry on foods that cause mold and bacteria to cause health problems.

Tear gas which is chemically based, continued Dedi, is the opposite of the nature of food, when it expires the chemical content decreases. Similar to the effectiveness of this tear gas when fired it couldn’t be more effective.

When the tear gas expires, it shoots out particles such as talcum powder. Fired as an explosion above, when an explosion occurs, smaller particles are inhaled, then hit the eyes causing stinging.

“So, if for example it has expired, the levels will decrease chemically, then the ability of this tear gas will also decrease,” said Dedi.

The finding of expired tear gas was disclosed by the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) based on the information it obtained. This information is currently being investigated.

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo at a press conference in Malang City, East Java, Thursday (6/10), said that there were 11 shots of tear gas fired by officers in the tragedy that occurred at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang Regency, East Java, October 1, 2022. .

According to the National Police Chief, seven of the tear gas were fired at the south stands of the Kanjuruhan Stadium.

“There were 11 personnel who fired tear gas, about seven shots to the south stand, one shot to the north and three shots to the field,” said Sigit.(Ant/OL-4)
