The National Team Will Face Vietnam, Shin Tae Yong Expects Support From Supporters

Indonesian national team coach Shin Tae-yong hopes for the support of fans to help complete the revenge mission in the U-20 Asian Cup qualifying group F against Vietnam at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya, Sunday (18/9).

“We really hope that fans will arrive at the stadium. We want to repay the results of the U-19 AFF Cup,” said Shin in Surabaya, Saturday (17/9).

In the first two matches, against Timor Leste and Hong Kong, the attendance of supporters in the stadium was only around 2,000 spectators.

In the 2022 edition of the AFF U-19 Cup, the Indonesian national team failed to advance to the semifinals despite collecting the same points as Vietnam and Thailand, namely 11.

That’s because, Shin’s troops lost head to head to Vietnam and Thailand because they were unable to score in the match against both of them which ended 0-0.

What was in the spotlight at that time, the Indonesian team questioned Thailand’s game against Vietnam, which was considered not to uphold sportsmanship because it seemed to play safe and did not want to score when the score was 1-1.

“Therefore, we want to prove it in Surabaya and have to win. The presence of supporters is highly expected,” said the South Korean coach.

Although he admitted that Vietnam was a strong team, Shin asked Marselino Ferdinand and his friends to fight extra hard until the referee blew the final whistle.

Shin even rested a number of his pillars in the second match of Group F against Hong Kong, Friday (26/9) night. In that match, Indonesia won with a score of 5-1.

The former South Korean coach at the 2018 World Cup deliberately rotated his team to maintain physical health due to the game break which was only two days apart.

Meanwhile, in the U-20 Asian Cup qualifying Group F, Indonesia is still at the top of the standings with six points from two wins. Meanwhile, Vietnam is below it with the same points.

Both teams still have a chance to qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup finals in Uzbekistan if they beat each other in the last match.

The winning team will advance to the next round, and the loser will have to wait for the results of the five best second-placed from all groups in the preliminary round.

The other two teams, Hong Kong and Timor Leste, are confirmed to have been eliminated after suffering two defeats to Indonesia and Vietnam.

Hong Kong and Timor Leste will face each other in the final Group F match at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya, Sunday (18/9) afternoon. (Ant/OL-1)
