Tuchel hopes Kovacic can play in FA Cup Final

THOMAS Tuchel hopes Mateo Kovacic can recover from an ankle injury so he can appear in the FA Cup final against Liverpool on Saturday (14/5).

Kovacic picked up the injury during Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Leeds United after being fouled by Daniel James which resulted in a red card for the Leeds midfielder.

The Croatian has suffered a recurring injury and Tuchel says only a miracle can see Kovacic feature at Wembley.

Despite experiencing swelling in his ankle, Kovacic insisted on training in order to feature against Liverpool.

“We will see his condition today. The reason is, it’s surprising to see him able to train,” said Tuchel.

“Mateo wants to train and our medical team gave him the green light.”

“He just had a problem with the ligaments. So, no new injury but his ankle is swollen. I hope he can play.”

Tuchel reckons Kovacic’s presence will be a boost for Chelsea, who will be seeking to win the FA Cup for the first time since 2018.

The Blues have lost in their last two FA Cup finals, against Arsenal and Leicester City. Tuchel’s children also lost on penalties in the League Cup final to Liverpool last February. (AFP/OL-1)
