U-23 National Team Ready to Face Malaysia or Thailand in the Semifinals

The coach of the Indonesia U-23 national team, Shin Tae-yong, emphasized that his team is ready to face any opponent in the semifinals of the men’s soccer branch of the SEA Games 2021 Vietnam. The Garuda squad made sure to qualify after winning over Myanmar 3-1 in the last match of Group A elimination, Sunday (15/5).

Indonesia is currently still waiting for the results of the Vietnam match against the caretaker team of Timor Leste to determine the winner of Group A. In Group B, Malaysia has already confirmed their qualification. One other ticket is likely to be won by Thailand.

“I also think that Thailand and Malaysia will enter the semifinals. And now, I have to prepare myself carefully so that Indonesia is ready to meet one of these two opponents,” Shin said after the match.

Regarding the match against Myanmar, Shin appreciated his players who appeared to press the opponent since the early minutes. As a result, Garuda Muda scored the winning goal in the first half through Egy Maulana Vikri (6′), Witan Sulaeman (10′), and Marselino Ferdinand (45+2′). In the second half, Garuda Muda was unable to add goals. On the other hand, Myanmar scored one goal through striker Win Naing Tun (67′).

“Before the game, I knew we just needed a draw. I told the players it was going to be a tough game. I asked them to press from the start. And I have to thank the players for doing well and winning the game. , said Shin.

Shin also explained that the tactics used against Myanmar were different from the previous two matches. He said, against Myanmar, you have to do tight pressing. Moreover, Myanmar has a strong defense like when holding Vietnam in a goalless draw.

“I see the Filipino player is tall but not fast, and there is space in defence. Therefore, I let the players play a counterattack. As for Myanmar, I watched them play against Vietnam and saw them defend. Therefore, from the first minute, I asked all the players to play high pressing and we won,” he said. (OL-15)
