USA and Iran and Germany and Spain in the same group for the 2022 World Cup


The United States (US) is in the same group as England and Iran in Group B of the 2022 World Cup, while Spain and Germany are in Group E.

Defending champions France will meet Denmark and Tunisia in Group D of the World Cup which kicks off on November 21.

For the US, the draw brought them together with their former colonizers Britain and Iran, with whom they had long political wars.

The US met Iran at the 1998 World Cup and lost 1-2 to the Gulf nation.

Group G is one of the toughest as it includes five-time world champions Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon.

The draw came after 45 minutes of music and video as FIFA president Gianni Infantino promised this World Cup to be the best tournament ever.

The decision taken in 2010 to hand over hosting rights to Qatar was heavily criticized and there is intense scrutiny of the human rights situation in the country.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani welcomed guests including the national team coach, World Cup-winning players and football officials who were all waiting to hear about the group stage matches in a ceremony hosted by British actor Idris Elba and broadcaster Reshmin Chowdhury.

The 2022 World Cup will run from November 21 to December 18, for the first time the World Cup is being contested in the Middle East and there is a distinctly Arab feel to the show. (Ant/OL-1)
