Villarreal Rely on Teamwork to Defeat Juventus

VILLARREAL will rely on the aspect of teamwork to overthrow Juventus’ favorite status ahead of the second leg of the Champions League last 16. This was conveyed by Villarreal coach Unai Emery.

Emery also believes the match, which is scheduled to take place at the Allianz Stadium, Italy, Thursday (17/3) WIB, will be a long battle so Villarreal must be prepared for the full 90 minutes or more considering the first leg is 1-1.

“They are clearly favourites, but we have to respond to it through teamwork,” Emery said in pre-match comments quoted from UEFA’s official website, Wednesday (16/3).

“Juventus will set high standards. We know this will be a long battle because Juventus have won more than drawn and lost so rarely,” he added.

Emery also emphasized that Villarreal anticipate the quality of Juve’s defense, which is filled with many quality players and their ability to take advantage of any mistakes made by the opponent.

“We will try to prepare for competitive matches and must also be ready for extra time. Now there is no longer an away goals rule, so more chances of the match having to go to extra time and penalties,” he said.

On the other hand, Emery insists Villarreal are still hungry for positive results after being able to pass the group stage quite well.

What’s more, Emery believes the experience in the first leg showed that his team were able to bounce back from the surprise goal created by Juve.

“We are still hungry for success after a good group stage. We can turn the situation around at home, especially after conceding in the first minute,” he said.

“Juventus are clearly one of the candidates to win the Champions League, but we have the ambition to go through and win our own recognition,” concluded Emery.

Meanwhile, Villarreal midfielder Giovani Lo Celso stressed patience and composure will be important aspects for his team to open the chance to qualify for the next round.

“We know this kind of game always emphasizes the importance of small details. We have to play calmly and patiently,” he said.

“They do have a number of great players, but we also have a good team and are in a positive momentum, where we are consolidating the ideas and character of this squad,” continued Lo Celso. (Ant/OL-1)
