Xavi wants to shake off the shadow of sacking

BARCELONA returned to winning ways after silencing Villarreal 3-0 at the Camp Nou Stadium in the 10th week of La Liga Spain, Friday (21/10) early morning. The victory was crucial for the coach Xavi Hernandez who wanted to erode the shadow of his dismissal.

Xavi realizes his position is under high pressure because he has not been able to bring Barca back to the highest place.

The defeat to Real Madrid in the El Clasico duel last weekend and Barca’s position on the verge of being eliminated from the Champions League group stage made Xavi obliged to prove himself in La Liga.

“I think we played a great game, it’s our turn. We have to react. It was not an easy day after losing at the Bernabeu and drawing with Inter. There is a lot of hope in this team, a lot to expect,” said Xavi.

“We’ve shown our faces, we’ve shown character, good intensity, very good defensively and above all in attack.”

Xavi was satisfied with his side’s reaction after having won just one win in their previous four matches against Villarreal. The 3-0 victory also reduced the pressure on him and the squad.

In that match, the Blaugrana appeared more aggressive by scoring three goals in just seven minutes in the first half. Robert Lewandowski scored the remaining two goals scored by Ansu Fati. Lewandowski has now added his tally to 11 goals in La Liga.

After the match, Barca fans shouted support for Xavi who openly admitted his position would be threatened if Barca did not win any trophies this season.

In the La Liga standings, Barca are now sticking to Madrid in second place to maintain hope for the title race. (AFP/Football Espana/OL-13)
